Picacho Peak Campout

Our cub scout pack camped out at Picacho Peak. It was the maiden voyage for our new 8 person tent! It felt absolutely luxurious after sleeping 5-6 people in our 4 person tent for the past few years.

Felix was very interested in putting up the tent.
Sleeping and especially napping in it? Not so much.

This kid loves being outside!

There were MASSIVE amounts of grasshoppers all over the campsite. The ground was almost a river of the little critters at some points. It was a source of much entertainment for the cubs.

It's hard to beat a desert sunset.

I love the vibe of cub scout campfires. The kids love the cheesy jokes, skits, and songs- and definitely the s'mores.

Saturday was a great blend of den activities (including armpit fudge, kite making, and a plaster dino dig) and free time. Elliot was off with a few older boys from the Boy Scout troop that were there with younger siblings, and Annie had an intense mud kitchen situation going on in a secret spot under some tree foliage. Isaac enjoyed dinking around in and out of trees, and Felix cried for a very long time as we tried every trick imaginable to get him to nap.

Isaac's group made cardboard cars and drove them around an obstacle course. Isaac had a VERY specific idea of what he wanted to do and was very set against any of Aaron's suggestions to make it more car-like.

Eventually we rounded up a group of bored campers and took them on a short hike to the Children's Cave by the visitor's center.

You might be wondering why there was a Martian park ranger hanging out by the live snake display.

It's probably related to having a manager who approved this dinosaur statue. To be clear, this State Park has no known ties to Dinos or Aliens that I know of- although the westernmost battle of the Civil War was fought here in 1862!

Taking our very tired lil guy up the trail

These champs love a good rock scramble

What a majestic spot for Annie to strike a pose

We remembered that Elliot was to teach his first Deacon's quorum lesson the following day, so we had a great brainstorming session with him as we hiked. He ended up writing out his Jacob and Esau discussion questions on the drive home and did a great job from what I hear from his leaders!

All in all, this was a great campout!
