Solar Eclipse- Eclipse Day!

We watched the eclipse at Frontier Park in Prosper, Texas. The eclipse was starting as we got there. We had solar glasses that we could use to watch as the moon started to pass in front of the sun, causing it to look like a crescent. We had an app downloaded that would tell us cool things to look for at different times as the eclipse progressed.

We packed this colander with us so that we could see that crescent shaped shadows coming through the holes

More crescent shaped shadows in a hole punched piece of paper

The edges of all shadows were blurred and there was some wiggly light stuff going on

Checking out our shadows

Prepping for totality!

The pictures and videos do not do it justice. There was a sharp drop in temperature and lights. All the lights in the parking lot nearby kicked on, and the crickets and nocturnal creatures came out. It felt absolutely surreal. It was different than night, different than dusk. I've never felt anything like it before. I don't know how to describe it other than it being so much more impressive than I thought it would be, and most of that had to do with how it felt more than what it looked like. We could take off our glasses and look right at the ring around the moon for about 2 minutes.

20 seconds before totality hit, Isaac bolted for the playground that was kind of far from our patch of grass. We had to choose between retrieving him or being present for the once in a lifetime solar eclipse. We let the lad go and found him after the eclipse was done. We had been talking about the eclipse for days, so I bet he knew what was going on, but I don't know if the wonder and majesty of the celestial event made him pause his playing or if he completely ignored it while going up and down the slides.

Our Eclipse viewing crew!

Colby and Alice rocking out to "Ring of Fire," one of the many hits on the Solar Eclipse Playlist. Other songs included "Total Eclipse of the Heart," "Dancing in the Dark," "Here Comes the Sun," "Moonshadow," "No Sunlight," and "Dancing in the Moonlight."
