The Grand Finale

We had a scary experience on the drive from Idaho Falls to Utah. I was driving along when a tire blew on the rental car. We skidded across a lane of highway traffic and off the road down a steep slope. We skidded to a stop at a 45 degree angle. It was a miracle that we didn't hit another car in the other lane or flipped as we went down the slope. The kids had no idea that we had a near death experience- their reaction was "Mom, why did you drive us over here?" We said a prayer of gratitude for our safety and got out to inspect the damage.

The front left wheel was blown, and the front and back wheels had been pushed off the rims by our skid. Other than that, the car was remarkably undamaged. A couple of guardian angels had pulled over when they saw us go off the road and already had 911 on the phone. A cop came and sorted out the accident report, and we arranged the tow with the car owner (we rented through an app called Turo). Our guardian angels were so kind and shared otter pops and sandwiches with our kids while we waited. We found out that they were headed to the town next to where we were going and had exactly 5 extra seats in their van. They have 5 kids but were having a couples getaway. They saved us hours of waiting in the heat with no shade for a replacement car by offering us a ride. There are some truly wonderful people in the world!

We got to the Allsops house only an hour later than we had originally planned, and Turo had a replacement car waiting for us. The crash was terrifying but ended up being a small fraction of how terrible it could have been.

The next day we treated the Allsops to lunch with our free Chick-fil-a bucks and then met up with my BYU roommates Laura and Kristy for dinner also at Chick-fil-a. Then, we were back to the airport to fly home!
