We pulled up to Kayenta Campground as it was getting dark. We threw up the tents as quickly as we could and got the kids to sleep. Around 1:00 am, the wind started blowing like crazy. Dust was getting in through the mesh parts of the tent, and the rain fly was getting noisily whipped around. The kids slept through it, but I got up to tighten the rain fly. I heard another mallet banging off a ways. The next morning we found out it was the Hays battening down the hatches at the same time as us. Their tent is much bigger and pretty bad at resisting wind. Part of their tent collapsed on Colby.

Mesa Arch is what we dubbed a "butt clencher," which is where there are steep drop offs with no rails. Having kids around these induces anxiety that manifests itself in clenched butt muscles and death grips on children's hands. |
