Another Krusty Thanksgiving

Kristy Tung came to visit for Thanksgiving again this year! Her roommate's grandma lives in Tucson and Krust drove down with them from Provo. It was so good having her around and catching up on life.

It was our first time cooking a Thanksgiving meal, but it really wasn't bad because we were only feeding 3 people and all of us cooked/cleaned together. We followed my Mom's bacon covered turkey technique and it it came out quite nicely. We also had mashed potatoes and gravy, rolls, stuffing, sparkling apple juice, orange jello with peach bits, and french silk pie.  I thought that the turkey was tender enough for Elliot to chew, but later found a big wad of partially chewed turkey stuck to the roof of his mouth, which also explained why he started turning his nose up at the mashed potatoes.
Thanksgiving Dinner

The day before Thanksgiving we toured Biosphere 2. It is this giant enclosure built by a millionaire in the late 1980's. It has a rainforest, ocean, mangrove swamp, grassland, and desert biome inside. They can completely seal it off from the outside world to create an almost completely controlled environment for various environmental science experiments. A group of 8 scientists sealed themselves in from 1991-1993, but ended up spending so much time farming that they weren't able to do very much of the research they were being paid to do. Nowadays the University of Arizona owns it and has a lot of research projects going on, but they let tour groups come through which means that things like air can flow in and out.

Outside of some of the buildings (it was really big)
The front door was strikingly similar to the hatch door from Lost
The rainforest was definitely the favorite biome
Jungle friends
I loved all the trusses. It was some cool architecture.
Krust was attacked by a T-Rex in the climate history museum
There was a GORGEOUS sunset on the drive home
We celebrated Black Friday by doing the Spanish Colonial History tour, starting with the San Xavier Mission. We came home for an Elliot nap and lunch, then drove down to Tubac to do the Presidio walking tour.

Getting the full cultural experience of frybread tacos at San Xavier. It had some mysterious clay-like something in it that was not very good, but the rest of it was tasty.
Krust was right at home at the front of the 1885 schoolhouse in Tubac
Elliot was very well behaved and not at all deserving of the dunce cap
The colonists pulverized silver ore by dragging boulders over them using this contraption
We spent Saturday walking the Turquoise Trail in downtown Tucson. It connects a bunch of historic sites. It took longer than anticipated, but was worth the trip into town. It was great weather for it.

Brightly colored buildings by the Visitor Center

We also played many games of Age of Empires while Elliot slept. Aaron kicked our butts over and over again until we started playing on a team against computer players. Krust and I got to learn his secrets and then we were able to beat him (2 against one... but still we considered it a major victory). Krust had a long winning streak playing Monopoly Deal, but Aaron eventually managed to win.

Elliot in October

Elliot changed a lot in October. He is super mobile now with a speedy little crawl and getting into all sorts of trouble. He's working on collecting bruises on his forehead and chewing on our furniture. He is also learning a lot- how to wave, how to open drawers and cabinets, etc etc. He has not mastered the concept of ledges and tries to fall off of chairs, couches, and beds whenever possible. No words yet despite my best efforts. He's sleeping really well. He cries when we walk into his room and he knows that he's going to be abandoned, but he stops pretty much as soon as I'm out of the room.
SO CUTE
Elliot with a ginormous (and very nice and mellow) dog. He loved her and laughed whenever she moved, but started crying when she barked.
Elliot looking adorably dorky with his shorts & socks combo
Compensating for his earlier dorkiness with some gangster action
(the monkey pjs only slightly ruin the effect)
He loved kneeling so that he can grind his teeth on the crib rail.
We dropped the mattress so he can't do it anymore.
Elliot likes staring at other kids, especially his friend Alice
so... interesting...
What a great face. I'll give you 3 guesses what he's doing here.
He enjoyed playing in boxes, but not face planting out of boxes
Examining a salt shaker while helping Aaron with his homework
He still has a fascination with vacuum cleaners.
He follows me around warily and plays tries to grab the cord.

Tumacacori Ruins

On the morning of Halloween, we drove down to Tubac to see the old Tumacacori ruins. The mission was founded in 1690's. The big church was built in the 1820's but was never fully finished and eventually abandoned. They had a nice walking tour and museum, as well as a smattering of reconstructed buildings and huts. There was also a lady making tortillas on a wood stove (delicious, but the salsa was a bit spicy for me).

Not pictured: The tortilla lady's ramada, our picnic lunch, a really nice garden, a mud hut, and other various structures

There were also a bunch of trails. We only got to go a little ways before we had to head back for Elliot's nap.
Too muddy for a stroller so Elliot got carried

A river! With water in it!
What cuties

Halloween

We had a great time having a little person to dress up for Halloween for the first time.

Awesome spooky sky (unfortunately this was a few days before Halloween... close enough)
Elliot was a super cute Dobby. I tried to tie/safety pin his pillow case in a non-destructive way and it turned out OK, but probably would have stayed on better if I had just cut it up.
A House Elf in the backyard

He eventually got used to the ginormous ear hat

"What is this thing on me?"
Aaron went as Harry Potter and I went as Luna Lovegood. Our costumes were not as cute as Elliot's.

Ready for the church Halloween party

Elliot's head is covering up Aaron's Gryffindor badge. Note Dobby's sock tucked in his belt
I ran into a far more authentic Luna Lovegood. We had the same printable spectroscopes.
Elliot permitted us to carve a pumpkin with friends a few days later. The trick was to keep a steady stream of bean dip going into his mouth while the other one worked.

Elephant pumpkin
Elliot was amused by the first few trick-or-treaters that came to our house before he headed to bed. I ended up setting up a chair outside to handle the steady stream of kids until I ran out of candy. I accidentally told one kid "Happy Birthday" instead of "Happy Halloween." Neither of us knew quite what to do after that.

Aaron and I finished off the day by watching the Mystery Science Theater 3000 version of "Squirm," a thrilling tale of a southern town terrorized by man-eating worms after a broken power line electrocutes the ground after a big storm. It was pretty amusing and 100% scientifically accurate.
Don't worry, most of the good guys lived the flesh-eating worm attack
